Blog Wednesday: Colombian Kitchen Design

In May of last year, my son and I traveled to Colombia to visit my parents and family. While visiting I was able to do some in person decorating! It was so much fun to be able to spend my time in Colombia doing what I love (interior design) for the people I love (my parents)!

BEFORE…

AFTER!

A little more about this project…

I designed this kitchen for my parents, almost everything was completed in person when I was in Colombia, only a few things were done when we returned to The United States.  What was really fun about this project was how it became a family DIY project!  My original plans included me hiring any pay local professional to take care of the construction and development part, but my father insisted that he wanted to do it all!  My father used to work in construction, he knows how to build, put floors, tiles, etc.  He is self-taught and self-made.  Having my dad help, made this project extra special and personal!  My father was happy to be back working as he used years ago, and being able to complete this project with my father still feels awesome, and a moment I will treasure.

Part of the wall on the left was taken down so the kitchen looks bigger and from this piece of wall the bahia was installed.  My father took care of installing the floor, tile, countertop, shelves and sink.  The floor, tile, countertop, sink and lighting are from @homecenter_co.  The bahia was made by @arteecodecoraciones and the wood was extended to the small wall. They work with recovered pine wood. The three chairs are from @mueblestugo.  The bahia was made at the height of a normal table to assist my mother, so in this way is better for her to seat at the table. At the opposite wall of the kitchen, we hang an artwork that my mommy made years ago and she loves this art so much.

A little more about Colombia…

I was born in Cali, Colombia, South America. We speak Spanish, love coffee, and in my city we dance salsa. Cali temperature is around 28 sometimes 30 Celsius. While the temperature varies, Cali is always hot! I love my Colombia as I love my USA. Every time my son and I travel to Colombia we have wonderful time there. It is always wonderful to see my parents and family again. I like to go to my parents farm and sometimes go to the ocean. These two places are so beautiful and bring peace to my soul. Here are some pictures when we went to the farm. My father, son, and I like to go to the hill, pick up some wild flowers, then we cross the tunnel. At the farm we can see the Colombian products like coffee trees, plantains, lemon trees, and corn.

In the next pictures you can see a small coffee tree, the coffee grinder machine and the coffee been ready to be grind. At the farm my daddy built this “fogón de leña” wood stove, I like to cook “sancocho” that is like a chicken soup in the fogón de leña because everything taste better when is cooked with wood. This fogón is so good that all the smoke goes through the red pipe, that works as a chimney, so no mess with the smoke while cooking.

We traveled to the ocean “San Andres Island.” From Cali to San Andres Island we took a plain that take about 2 hours to get there. San Andres is part of Colombia, but the only way to go there is by plane. San Andres Island is absolutely gorgeous. It ocean is known as “El mar de los 7 colores” which means “The ocean of the 7 colors”

The next pictures are from a trip to San Andres Island years ago. This was the first time my parent and Manny traveled to San Andres Island. This trip was an unforgettable and wonderful experience.

It was a pleasure to write this blog post for all of you. It brought me very beautiful memories. I hope you enjoyed reading it. Have a wonderful day and see you later in our next blog post!

With love,

Gina.
