How to Transition Your Home Decor from Halloween to Thanksgiving

One of my favorite things outside of decorating and e-designing for clients is decorating my own living space! Especially decorating in accordance with the seasons! With Halloween coming up next week, our halloween decorations are out and ready to trick and treat! But before we know it, Halloween will be over and will be Thanksgiving is just around the corner!

The transitioning between fall to Halloween, followed by Thanksgiving decor doesn’t have to be a headache. Transitioning through your decor themes throughout the fall season can be made simple with some quick tricks and tips. After Halloween ends, you can seamlessly create a welcoming and fresh environment for the next holiday!

THINK PRACTICAL

When it comes to selecting the right decor for the fall season –or any holiday or season for that matter– think in terms of practicality!

Design Tip: Purchase seasonal and holiday decor items that are less single-use. Items like faux pumpkins, wreaths, and the like are more versatile that can last with you from September well into November and the years to come!

Remove the Spook Factor

First things first. Remove all spooky and scary decorations. Gravestones, skeletons, zombies, witches, and any other Halloween character decor and symbols. After you’ve removed all of your Halloween decorations, you can also take the time to rearrange your remaining fall decorations as well as add some extra things to make your decor spread feel more full.

Design Tip: Leave in place any fall vignettes you have created, just replace the spooky stuff with pumpkins, pinecones, feathers, or anything that brings a sense of Thanksgiving, Autumn vibe to you.

After you’ve removed your Halloween decorations, there may be some empty areas that could use some more decorations. Add in extra decorations that fit into the traditional fall theme. This can be as simple as adding in more pumpkin decorations, more harvest themed signs and wall decor, or more vases of fall flowers and foliage.

Festive Thanksgiving Decoration Ideas

  • Sentiment signs with sayings such as “gather”, “thankful”, and “grateful”

  • Real or faux gourds displayed on tabletops in addition to pumpkins

  • Cornucopias with real or faux flowers and foliage displayed inside

  • Decorative accents that contain symbols such as turkeys, corn, and pumpkin pie
